Data Withholding Attacks

Threat

Data withholding attacks represent a significant threat to the security model of optimistic rollups, where a malicious sequencer or validator attempts to prevent the publication of transaction data to the base layer. By withholding the data required for verification, the attacker can prevent other nodes from reconstructing the rollup’s state and challenging fraudulent transactions. This attack vector undermines the core assumption of optimistic rollups, which relies on the ability of honest participants to submit fraud proofs. The attack essentially halts the rollup’s operation and prevents users from withdrawing their funds.
