Layer 2 Settlement

Settlement

Layer 2 settlement, within the context of cryptocurrency, options trading, and financial derivatives, refers to the process of finalizing transactions and transferring assets outside of the primary, or Layer 1, blockchain or exchange infrastructure. This approach aims to alleviate congestion and reduce costs associated with on-chain settlement, particularly for high-frequency trading and complex derivative instruments. The core principle involves executing trades and recording settlement data on a secondary layer, subsequently anchoring a summary or proof of settlement back to the main chain for security and immutability. Consequently, it enhances transaction throughput and lowers fees while maintaining the integrity of the underlying asset.
