Proof of Useful Work (PoUW) represents a consensus mechanism diverging from traditional Proof-of-Work (PoW) by incentivizing computational effort directed towards verifiable, beneficial outcomes. Rather than solving arbitrary cryptographic puzzles, PoUW protocols require participants to perform tasks with demonstrable utility, such as machine learning inference, scientific simulations, or data analysis. This approach aims to align blockchain incentives with real-world value creation, mitigating the energy consumption criticisms leveled against PoW systems. The core challenge lies in designing robust evaluation functions that accurately assess the usefulness of submitted work and prevent malicious actors from submitting trivial or misleading solutions.
