Proof-of-Stake Illiquidity

Constraint

Proof-of-Stake (PoS) illiquidity refers to the phenomenon where staked assets, used to secure a PoS blockchain, are locked up for a certain period, making them unavailable for immediate trading or use in other financial activities. This constraint arises from the protocol’s design to ensure network security and discourage malicious behavior through slashing mechanisms. The locking period, or unbonding period, can range from days to weeks, creating a temporary illiquidity for the staked capital. This affects capital efficiency for stakers. It imposes a temporal restriction on asset utility.
