Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus protocols represent a class of mechanisms utilized in distributed ledger technology to achieve agreement on a single state of the blockchain without relying on energy-intensive proof-of-work systems. These algorithms select validators—participants who stake a certain amount of cryptocurrency—to create new blocks and validate transactions, proportional to their stake, incentivizing honest behavior through rewards and penalties. The selection process often incorporates randomization techniques to mitigate centralization risks and enhance security against potential attacks, such as long-range attacks or nothing-at-stake problems. Consequently, PoS algorithms are central to the scalability and sustainability of many modern blockchain networks, offering a viable alternative to traditional consensus models.
