MEV and Mechanism Design

Action

Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) represents the profit a participant can make by including, excluding, or reordering transactions within a block they produce, leveraging their control over block creation. This fundamentally alters incentive structures within consensus mechanisms, shifting focus from solely validating transactions to strategically optimizing transaction inclusion for personal gain. Consequently, mechanism design in this context aims to mitigate the negative externalities of MEV, such as front-running and sandwich attacks, while preserving network security and decentralization. Effective strategies involve introducing fairness mechanisms or altering block subsidy models to disincentivize opportunistic behavior.
