Layer 2 Systems

Architecture

Layer 2 systems represent a suite of technologies designed to enhance the scalability and efficiency of blockchain networks, particularly within cryptocurrency, options trading, and derivatives. These systems operate “off-chain,” meaning transactions and computations occur outside the primary blockchain, reducing congestion and associated costs on the main chain. The architectural diversity is significant, encompassing solutions like rollups, state channels, and sidechains, each employing distinct mechanisms to achieve improved throughput and reduced latency. Consequently, Layer 2 solutions enable more complex financial instruments and trading strategies, such as perpetual swaps and sophisticated options contracts, while maintaining a connection to the underlying security of the base layer.
