Ethereum Scaling Trilemma

Architecture

The Ethereum Scaling Trilemma represents a fundamental challenge in blockchain design, specifically concerning the simultaneous optimization of scalability, security, and decentralization. Current Ethereum architecture, while robust in security and decentralization, faces limitations in transaction throughput, necessitating scaling solutions. This trilemma posits that achieving all three properties at an optimal level is inherently difficult, requiring trade-offs between them; improvements in one area often compromise another. Layer-2 solutions, such as rollups, aim to mitigate this by processing transactions off-chain while maintaining security through on-chain verification, demonstrating a strategic approach to addressing the trilemma’s constraints.
