Transaction Finality Speed
Transaction finality speed refers to the time required for a transaction to be considered irreversible and permanently recorded on a blockchain. In traditional finance, settlement can take days, but in crypto, it can range from seconds to hours depending on the consensus mechanism.
High finality speed is essential for derivative platforms, as it allows for rapid margin updates and position closures. If finality is slow, there is a period of "probabilistic" settlement where a transaction could technically be reverted, creating a window of risk for both the protocol and the trader.
Fast finality enhances the capital efficiency of a system by allowing assets to be reused immediately, making it a critical metric for evaluating the performance and reliability of different blockchain architectures for financial applications.
