Validator Alignment Problems

Origin

Validator alignment problems describe situations where the economic incentives or strategic interests of individual validators diverge from the overall goals of the blockchain network. This misalignment can lead to behaviors that, while rational for the individual validator, are detrimental to network security, decentralization, or fairness. Examples include prioritizing maximum extractable value (MEV) over transaction fairness or colluding to censor specific transactions. Such problems challenge the core cryptoeconomic assumptions of Proof of Stake systems. They introduce systemic fragility.
