Systemic Margin

Margin

In cryptocurrency and derivatives markets, margin represents the collateral posted by a trader to cover potential losses. It acts as a performance bond, enabling leveraged trading positions beyond the trader’s available capital. Systemic margin, specifically, addresses the interconnectedness of margin requirements across multiple positions and counterparties, acknowledging that a default in one area can trigger cascading effects throughout the system. This concept is particularly relevant in decentralized finance (DeFi) and over-the-counter (OTC) markets where counterparty risk and complex derivative structures are prevalent.
