State Update Exploitation

Mechanism

State update exploitation occurs when an actor manipulates the asynchronous latency between offchain data processing and onchain settlement within a decentralized derivative protocol. By identifying discrepancies in the timing of state changes, traders can inject transactions that profit from stale price feeds or delayed collateral valuation. This behavior undermines the deterministic nature of smart contracts by prioritizing order execution based on knowledge of pending system updates rather than market supply and demand.
