Protocol Slashing Mechanism

Mechanism

Protocol slashing represents a crucial security and incentive mechanism within blockchain networks, particularly those employing Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus. It functions as a deterrent against malicious or negligent behavior by validators, those responsible for confirming transactions and maintaining the network’s integrity. When a validator fails to perform their duties correctly, such as attesting to invalid transactions or going offline, a portion of their staked assets is forfeited, or “slashed,” as a penalty. This process ensures network stability and discourages actions that could compromise the blockchain’s security.
