Proof-of-Authority

Architecture

Proof-of-Authority represents a consensus mechanism where block production and network validation are restricted to a predetermined set of approved participants, known as authorities. This contrasts with Proof-of-Work or Proof-of-Stake, where anyone can theoretically participate, and instead relies on established identities and reputation for security. The selection criteria for these authorities typically involve rigorous vetting processes, emphasizing real-world accountability and minimizing the potential for Sybil attacks. Consequently, this model prioritizes transaction finality and efficiency, often achieving higher throughput compared to more decentralized alternatives, making it suitable for private or consortium blockchains.
