Nothing at Stake Prevention

Algorithm

Nothing at Stake Prevention addresses a critical vulnerability inherent in Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanisms, where validators lack economic disincentives to concurrently attest to conflicting blockchain histories. This creates a scenario where validators can maximize potential rewards by simultaneously supporting multiple forks, diminishing the security guarantees typically associated with blockchain immutality. Effective mitigation strategies involve slashing conditions, where validators staking on multiple forks forfeit a portion or all of their staked assets, aligning incentives with honest chain selection. The implementation of robust finality gadgets, such as Tendermint’s, further reduces the probability of equivocation by establishing definitive block confirmations.
