Negative Equity

Asset

Negative equity, within cryptocurrency and derivatives markets, arises when the value of an underlying asset securing a position falls below the outstanding obligation, creating a shortfall. This situation is particularly relevant with leveraged trades, where margin requirements amplify potential losses, and collateral posted may become insufficient to cover adverse price movements. Consequently, margin calls are triggered, demanding additional funds to restore the account to a positive equity position, or forced liquidation occurs to mitigate further exposure for the counterparty.
