Margin Haircuts

Definition

Margin haircuts refer to a reduction in the recognized value of collateral posted by a borrower, applied by a lender or clearinghouse, to account for potential price volatility and liquidity risk. For instance, if a cryptocurrency asset is used as collateral, a haircut means only a percentage of its market value is considered for margin calculations. This buffer protects the lender against adverse price movements of the collateral asset. It is a critical risk management tool.
