HTLC Mechanisms

Mechanism

Hash Time-Locked Contracts (HTLCs) represent a cryptographic protocol enabling conditional payments, crucial for atomic swaps and secure transactions across disparate blockchains. These mechanisms leverage a one-time secret and a time lock to ensure either both parties fulfill their obligations or the transaction reverts, preventing theft. The core principle involves generating a hash of a secret, revealing it only after a specified time, thereby incentivizing cooperation and guaranteeing funds are released only upon successful completion of the exchange. HTLCs are foundational for trustless, peer-to-peer value transfer without intermediaries.
