GPU Mining Era

Algorithm

The GPU Mining Era fundamentally reshaped consensus mechanisms within proof-of-work (PoW) cryptocurrencies, initially driven by the application of graphics processing units to accelerate hash rate calculations. This shift from CPU mining to GPU mining dramatically lowered the barrier to entry, fostering increased network participation and, consequently, heightened security through distributed computational power. However, the subsequent specialization towards application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) effectively curtailed the profitability of GPU mining, leading to a transition towards more energy-efficient mining hardware and a re-evaluation of PoW’s long-term sustainability. The algorithmic efficiency gains enabled by GPUs initially provided a competitive advantage, but ultimately proved transient in the face of specialized hardware.
