FPGA Mining History

Architecture

The initial deployment of FPGA mining hardware within cryptocurrency ecosystems, particularly Bitcoin, leveraged custom-designed field-programmable gate arrays to accelerate the SHA-256 hashing algorithm. This approach, prevalent from 2013 to 2017, offered a significant performance advantage over conventional CPUs and GPUs, enabling miners to achieve substantially higher hash rates and increased profitability. However, the specialized nature of FPGA mining rigs, coupled with the rapid evolution of ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) technology, ultimately led to their decline in competitiveness. The architectural shift towards ASICs represented a fundamental change in the mining landscape, prioritizing efficiency and scale over programmability.
