Ethereum Finality

Finality

Ethereum finality denotes the point at which a transaction becomes irreversibly included in the blockchain, representing a consensus achieved across the network’s validators. This characteristic is crucial for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications and derivatives, as it mitigates the risk of transaction reversals impacting contract execution and settlement. Achieving finality on Ethereum, particularly post-Merge, relies on a combination of Proof-of-Stake consensus and the Casper FFG (Friendly Finality Gadget) which provides economic assurances against chain reorganizations. Consequently, the speed and certainty of finality directly influence the viability of complex financial instruments built on the Ethereum infrastructure.
