DeFi 1.0

Architecture

DeFi 1.0 primarily refers to the initial wave of decentralized finance protocols built predominantly on the Ethereum blockchain, characterized by a reliance on smart contracts for automated execution of financial agreements. These early systems often featured relatively simple token designs and straightforward lending/borrowing mechanisms, frequently employing ERC-20 tokens and Compound-style interest rate models. The architectural focus was on permissionless access and composability, enabling developers to build upon existing protocols, fostering rapid innovation but also introducing systemic risks due to interconnectedness. Consequently, DeFi 1.0’s design often lacked sophisticated risk management tools and robust governance structures, presenting challenges for long-term sustainability and scalability.
