Bid-Ask Asymmetry

Microstructure

Bid-ask asymmetry describes a market condition where the depth of buy orders (bids) and sell orders (asks) in an order book is significantly unbalanced, creating a skewed distribution around the current market price. This phenomenon often reflects a directional bias in order flow, where market participants are predominantly either buying or selling, leading to a temporary imbalance in supply and demand. In decentralized finance (DeFi) automated market makers (AMMs), this asymmetry can manifest as a non-uniform distribution of liquidity across the price range, impacting the cost of execution for large trades.
