Yield-Bearing Collateral Risks
Yield-bearing collateral risks involve the dangers associated with using interest-earning assets as margin. While these assets provide additional returns, they often introduce complex risks, such as smart contract vulnerabilities, platform insolvency, or the risk that the underlying yield will vanish during a market downturn.
Furthermore, if the yield-bearing asset is a tokenized version of another asset, there is a risk that the wrapper will fail or lose its backing. Traders must carefully weigh the marginal benefit of the yield against the increased technical and systemic risks.
In a crisis, the complexity of these assets can make them harder to exit or convert back to cash, potentially trapping capital exactly when it is needed for margin requirements.
