Wrapped Assets
Wrapped assets are digital tokens that represent an underlying asset from a different blockchain, held in custody or locked in a smart contract. For example, Wrapped Bitcoin on Ethereum allows holders to use the value of Bitcoin within the Ethereum ecosystem, such as in decentralized finance applications.
The wrapping process involves sending the original asset to a custodian or a bridge contract, which then mints an equivalent amount of the wrapped token on the destination chain. This creates a bridge between different ecosystems, increasing liquidity and utility for the original asset.
However, wrapped assets introduce a reliance on the security of the bridge or the custodian holding the original collateral. If the bridge is compromised, the wrapped asset could lose its peg, leading to significant financial loss for holders.
