Whitelisting
Whitelisting is a security practice that explicitly grants access or permissions only to a pre-approved list of entities. In decentralized finance, this often means that only specific wallet addresses can interact with a smart contract or liquidity pool.
This is used to ensure that only verified or accredited participants can engage in certain activities, such as high-stakes derivative trading. By restricting access to a known set of actors, protocols can significantly reduce the risk of malicious activity.
However, this approach is often criticized for being centralized and exclusionary. It requires a process for managing the list, which can become a bottleneck as the platform scales.
Despite these concerns, whitelisting is a common feature in permissioned DeFi and institutional-grade platforms. It is a powerful tool for maintaining control in an otherwise open and trustless environment.
