Vetoken Model Mechanics
The veToken model, or vote-escrowed token model, is a mechanism that aligns long-term stakeholder interests by requiring users to lock their tokens for a specified duration in exchange for governance power and enhanced rewards. The longer the lock-up period, the greater the voting power and the higher the share of protocol fees or incentives the user receives.
This design effectively discourages short-term speculation and encourages participants to contribute to the protocol's long-term growth. It creates a synthetic scarcity of voting power, as tokens must be locked to be effective.
This model has been widely adopted by decentralized exchanges and lending platforms to ensure that governance is driven by committed stakeholders. However, it also introduces complexity for users who must manage their lock-up periods and potential liquidity constraints.
The mechanics of the veToken model are central to understanding how protocols incentivize sustained participation and value capture.
