Upgradeability Patterns
Upgradeability Patterns are design structures in smart contracts that allow the code to be updated or patched without losing the state of the contract or forcing users to migrate to a new address. This is typically achieved using proxy contracts, where the proxy acts as a permanent address that delegates calls to a logic contract.
When an update is needed, the proxy is simply pointed to a new version of the logic contract. While this is essential for fixing bugs and adding features, it introduces a significant security risk if the upgrade mechanism itself is not secure.
Proper implementation requires strict governance controls to ensure that only authorized and audited code is deployed to the production environment.
