Trade Settlement

Trade settlement is the final step in a transaction where the ownership of an asset is transferred and the corresponding payment is made. In traditional markets, this process often takes several days, known as T plus settlement cycles.

In cryptocurrency markets, settlement can occur near-instantaneously on-chain, or it may be deferred by centralized exchanges that use internal ledger systems. Efficient settlement is vital because it reduces the time that parties are exposed to each other's credit risk.

During the settlement period, there is a risk that one party may fail to deliver the asset or the cash, which is why clearinghouses are so important. The evolution toward atomic settlement, where delivery and payment happen simultaneously, is a major trend in digital finance.

This eliminates the settlement risk entirely by removing the delay between the two legs of the trade. Proper settlement infrastructure is essential for maintaining trust and operational integrity in any trading venue.
