Total Addressable Supply

Total addressable supply refers to the maximum number of tokens that will ever exist for a given cryptocurrency protocol. This is often defined in the protocol's code as a hard cap, such as the 21 million limit for Bitcoin.

Knowing the total supply is critical for investors to understand the potential dilution of their holdings and the long-term scarcity of the asset. Unlike fiat currencies, which can be printed indefinitely, many digital assets have a fixed or mathematically defined supply schedule.

This provides a level of predictability that is highly valued in the crypto space. However, it is important to distinguish between the total supply, the circulating supply, and the locked or vested supply.

Some tokens may have a large total supply but a small circulating supply, which can lead to significant price volatility when more tokens are released into the market. Analysts use this metric to evaluate the long-term viability and potential for value accrual.

It is a fundamental piece of information for any serious fundamental analysis of a digital asset.
