Systemic Settlement Failure
Systemic settlement failure is the total breakdown of the process by which trades are finalized and ownership is transferred. In a healthy market, settlement is guaranteed by the clearinghouse; however, if the infrastructure supporting this process fails, the entire market enters a state of uncertainty.
This can be caused by technical bugs, cyberattacks, or the insolvency of the clearinghouse itself. In the context of digital assets, settlement failure can also involve the loss of access to blockchain networks or the inability to execute smart contract transactions.
The impact of such a failure is catastrophic, as it destroys trust in the platform and prevents users from accessing their assets. Maintaining system resilience requires redundant infrastructure, offline backup protocols, and rigorous audit trails.
