Supply Caps
A supply cap is a fixed limit on the total number of tokens that can ever exist in a cryptocurrency network. This is a fundamental design choice that creates absolute scarcity, similar to digital gold.
By ensuring that the supply cannot be increased beyond a certain point, a supply cap provides a hedge against inflation and devaluation. Bitcoin is the most famous example of a project with a hard supply cap.
This scarcity is a key part of its value proposition and its attractiveness as a store of value. However, a hard supply cap can also pose challenges for the long-term security of a network, as it requires that transaction fees alone be sufficient to incentivize miners or validators once the block reward ends.
Projects must carefully consider the trade-offs between scarcity and long-term security when deciding whether to implement a supply cap. It remains one of the most powerful tools for establishing trust and long-term value in the digital asset space.
