Settlement Time
Settlement time is the period between the execution of a trade and the actual transfer of ownership of the assets and the corresponding payment. In traditional finance, this often spans several days, commonly referred to as T plus 2.
In the context of cryptocurrency and digital derivatives, settlement time is frequently instantaneous or near-instantaneous due to blockchain technology. When a trade is executed on a decentralized exchange or through a smart contract, the clearing and settlement happen concurrently.
This eliminates the counterparty risk associated with the time lag found in legacy systems. Efficient settlement is critical for maintaining market liquidity and ensuring that margin requirements are accurately reflected in real-time.
Shorter settlement times reduce the window of exposure to price volatility between trade agreement and finality.
