Seigniorage

Seigniorage is the profit made by an issuer of currency or tokens, calculated as the difference between the face value of the currency and the cost of producing it. In the context of algorithmic stablecoins or decentralized protocols, seigniorage refers to the value captured by the system when new tokens are minted to stabilize a peg or fund development.

If a protocol can issue tokens that are accepted as having value, the issuer captures the economic surplus. This is a powerful mechanism for funding decentralized autonomous organizations but carries significant risks if the demand for the token collapses.

Proper management of seigniorage is vital for maintaining the stability and long-term viability of algorithmic monetary systems. It is essentially the economic rent earned from the issuance of money.
