## Segregated Witness

Segregated Witness is a protocol upgrade that separates the signature data from the transaction data in a block. This was primarily introduced to solve transaction malleability and to increase the effective capacity of blocks.

By moving the signature data to a separate structure, the transaction ID no longer depends on the signature, preventing the hash from being changed by an attacker. This upgrade also allows for more efficient validation of signatures by nodes.

In the context of financial derivatives, Segregated Witness provides a more stable and scalable foundation for building complex layer-two solutions like payment channels. It is a critical component of modern blockchain architecture that enhances both security and throughput.
