## Seed Phrases

A seed phrase is a human-readable representation of a master private key, typically consisting of a sequence of 12 to 24 words generated during the creation of a wallet. This phrase serves as the ultimate backup, allowing a user to recover their entire set of private keys and access their assets if their primary device is lost or destroyed.

Because it provides absolute control over the associated funds, it must be stored in an extremely secure, offline location, as anyone with access to the phrase can fully control the assets. In the context of derivatives, losing a seed phrase means losing access to all open positions and collateral, making it a critical point of failure.

It is the fundamental recovery mechanism for self-custody, transforming complex cryptographic math into a manageable, albeit high-stakes, mnemonic.
