Risk-Free Rate in DeFi

The risk-free rate in DeFi is the theoretical rate of return an investor can expect from an investment with zero risk of financial loss, typically represented by stablecoin lending yields or staking rewards on highly secure protocols. In traditional finance, this is usually linked to government bonds, but in crypto, the concept is decentralized and often tied to protocol-specific yields.

These rates fluctuate based on supply and demand for leverage and liquidity within the ecosystem. Traders use these rates as a benchmark to determine the hurdle rate for other, riskier investments.

However, because all DeFi protocols carry some degree of smart contract or governance risk, there is no truly risk-free asset in the space.
