Relayer Decentralization
Relayer decentralization involves distributing the responsibility of observing events on a source blockchain and submitting the corresponding proofs to a destination blockchain across a network of independent participants. In centralized bridge designs, a single entity or a small group acts as the relayer, creating a significant point of failure that could be exploited to inject fraudulent messages or halt the service.
By decentralizing this role, the system relies on a consensus mechanism or a competitive market of nodes to ensure that valid messages are delivered while invalid ones are rejected. This approach enhances the resilience of the bridge against censorship and malicious manipulation.
It is a critical component of protocol physics, as it aligns the incentives of the relayers with the security of the underlying assets. If relayers are incentivized to act honestly through staking or economic penalties, the integrity of the cross-chain messages is significantly bolstered.
