## Realized Gain

A realized gain occurs when an asset is sold or exchanged for a higher value than its original purchase price, resulting in a taxable profit. In crypto markets, this is distinct from an unrealized gain, which is merely a paper profit on an asset still held in a wallet.

A realized gain is only confirmed upon the finalization of a trade, at which point it becomes subject to tax reporting. For options traders, this includes gains from closing positions or the expiration of options contracts.

Tracking realized gains is critical for accurate accounting and compliance with financial regulations. Because crypto assets can be highly volatile, the timing of realization can significantly alter the tax outcome.

Investors often calculate their total realized gains at the end of each fiscal year to determine their total tax obligations.
