Protocol Upgrades
Protocol upgrades are planned changes to the software that governs a blockchain network, often implemented to improve security, scalability, or functionality. These upgrades can be soft forks, which are backward-compatible, or hard forks, which require all nodes to upgrade to the new rules.
In the derivatives space, upgrades often introduce new opcodes for smart contracts or optimizations for transaction processing. Because these changes can affect the underlying economics and security of the assets, they are subject to intense community and stakeholder debate.
A well-managed upgrade process is essential for the long-term viability of a blockchain. It allows the network to adapt to new threats and market demands while maintaining its core value proposition.
