Protocol Autonomy
Protocol autonomy is the degree to which a decentralized system can operate and evolve independently of human intervention or centralized control. A highly autonomous protocol is one where all key functions, including updates and risk management, are handled by smart contracts and community consensus.
This autonomy is a key value proposition for crypto, as it ensures censorship resistance and durability. However, it also means that the protocol is only as good as its initial design and its ability to adapt.
Achieving the right balance between autonomy and the need for human-led strategic direction is a major challenge for developers. True autonomy remains an aspirational goal for many decentralized finance projects.
