## Protective Put Strategy

A protective put strategy is a risk management technique where an investor holds a long position in an underlying asset and simultaneously purchases a put option for that same asset. This strategy acts like an insurance policy for the investor portfolio.

By owning the put option, the investor secures the right to sell the underlying asset at a predetermined strike price, regardless of how far the market price drops. This effectively creates a floor for potential losses while allowing the investor to participate in any upside price movement.

In the context of cryptocurrencies, this is particularly useful due to the extreme volatility inherent in digital assets. The cost of purchasing the put option, known as the premium, is the price paid for this downside protection.

If the asset price rises, the put option expires worthless, and the investor loses only the premium paid. If the asset price crashes, the put option gains value, offsetting the losses incurred on the underlying asset.

It is a fundamental tool for capital preservation in volatile markets.
