Proof of Reserves Efficacy
Proof of reserves efficacy is the measure of how accurately and transparently a platform proves it holds the assets it claims to have for its users. This usually involves cryptographic proof, such as Merkle trees, that verify liabilities against on-chain holdings.
However, proof of reserves only shows a snapshot in time and does not account for liabilities off-chain or hidden debt. It is a necessary but insufficient condition for total custodial security.
Investors must scrutinize the methodology to ensure it is not just a marketing facade for opaque custodial operations.
