Principal-Agent Problem
The principal-agent problem describes a situation where the interests of the agent, who makes decisions, do not align with the interests of the principal, who owns the assets. In financial derivatives and crypto governance, the principal delegates authority to an agent, but information asymmetry often prevents the principal from monitoring the agent effectively.
This leads to moral hazard, where the agent might take excessive risks or pursue personal gains at the expense of the principal. In the context of smart contract management, the developer or delegate acts as the agent, while the token holders act as the principals.
Without proper incentive alignment, such as staking requirements or performance-based compensation, the agent may prioritize short-term profit over long-term security. Mitigating this requires transparent reporting and mechanisms that hold agents accountable for their actions.
It is a fundamental challenge in decentralized finance architecture.
