## Pinning Effect

The pinning effect occurs when the price of an underlying asset is drawn toward a specific strike price as an option expiration approaches. This phenomenon is largely driven by the hedging activities of market makers who hold large positions in options at that strike.

As expiration nears, the gamma of these options becomes extremely high, forcing market makers to buy or sell the underlying asset aggressively to hedge their positions. This intense hedging activity can effectively lock the asset price at the strike price, minimizing the delta risk for the market maker.

It is a classic example of how derivative market structure influences the price discovery process of the underlying asset.
