Physical Key Protection

Physical key protection refers to the measures taken to secure the physical storage media of private keys, such as hardware wallets, paper backups, or metal seed plates. This includes using safes, bank deposit boxes, and geographically dispersed locations to protect against theft, fire, flood, or loss.

Because cryptocurrency is bearer-asset technology, the physical possession of the key is equivalent to ownership; therefore, protecting the physical medium is as critical as the digital security. This also includes preventing unauthorized access to the devices through biometric locks or PIN codes.

Effective physical protection ensures that even if a digital backup is lost or corrupted, the owner retains the means to reconstruct their wallet. It is a fundamental component of a comprehensive personal or institutional recovery strategy.
