Physical Delivery
Physical delivery is a settlement method where the actual underlying asset is transferred from the seller to the buyer upon contract expiration. In the cryptocurrency domain, this means the delivery of the actual digital asset, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, rather than a cash equivalent.
This requires the infrastructure to handle on-chain transactions and ensure that the assets are delivered securely to the buyer's wallet. Physical delivery is often preferred by institutional investors who want to acquire the underlying asset for long-term holding or to use in decentralized finance protocols.
It acts as a strong anchor between the derivative market and the spot market, as the settlement price must converge with the spot price to prevent arbitrage opportunities.
