Orphan Rate
The orphan rate is the frequency at which valid blocks produced by miners or validators are not included in the main chain, rendering them effectively useless. This occurs when two or more nodes find a block at the same time, and the network eventually converges on only one of them.
A high orphan rate is an indicator of network inefficiency, often caused by slow propagation times relative to the block generation interval. In competitive mining environments, a high orphan rate reduces the profitability of miners and can be a symptom of a network struggling to scale.
It is a critical metric for developers to monitor when adjusting block times or network protocols to ensure that the majority of work is successfully integrated into the ledger.
