Options gamma exposure refers to the aggregate sensitivity of a portfolio or market to the rate of change in delta relative to the underlying asset price. Gamma measures how much the delta of an option changes as the underlying asset moves.
When market makers have high positive gamma exposure, they are forced to trade in the direction of the market to remain delta-neutral, which can exacerbate trends. Conversely, negative gamma exposure forces them to trade against the trend, which can act as a stabilizer or lead to rapid volatility if they are forced to cover positions.

By calculating the total gamma of the market, analysts can identify levels where price movement might accelerate or stall. This concept is central to understanding how options positioning influences the liquidity and stability of the underlying spot market.
