On-Chain Verification Cost
On-chain verification cost is the amount of gas required to verify a cryptographic proof on the base blockchain. While generating a proof is computationally expensive for the prover, the verification process must be highly efficient for the blockchain to accept it.
If the verification cost is too high, the scalability benefits of rollups are diminished, as it limits the number of proofs that can be settled per block. For derivative protocols, this cost is a key component of the total transaction fee paid by users.
Protocols aim for constant or logarithmic verification time, ensuring that the cost remains low regardless of the complexity of the underlying transactions. High verification costs can lead to congestion on the main layer, increasing the overall cost of financial operations.
Keeping these costs minimal is a prerequisite for supporting high-volume, low-margin trading strategies on-chain.
